In a remarkable display of maternal instinct, a golden retriever named Tabatha helped rescue not only herself but also her eight precious puppies after being abandoned on an empty property in Fresno, California.
Last month, animal control officer Priscilla Wolcott from Fresno Humane Animal Services received a call about dogs in distress. When she arrived at the vacant home, she was greeted by two adult golden retrievers wagging their tails despite having survived for two weeks without food or water. One was Tabatha, the devoted mother, and the other was her 9-month-old daughter, Kayla.
Wolcott noticed that puppies were missing but couldn't locate them immediately. Trusting her intuition, she decided to follow Tabatha—and the mama dog didn't disappoint. She led Wolcott straight to an old chicken coop, where eight tiny, healthy golden retriever puppies were nestled together in a corner. Despite the harsh conditions, Tabatha had managed to keep her babies safe, warm, and well-fed.
Wolcott was moved by the scene. "They were immediately jumping all over me, like, 'Take me with you,'" she shared. All ten dogs calmly entered their crates and were transported to safety.
The entire family was transferred to Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary, where they received medical care and love. According to Audrey Farrington, the rescue's board chair, the puppies—now five weeks old—are blossoming with personality, and Tabatha remains a vigilant, affectionate mother who only steps away for brief sunbaths.
The best part? All ten dogs already have approved adopters waiting. Soon, Tabatha, Kayla, and the eight puppies will begin their new lives in forever homes, leaving their painful past behind.
